Former NBA lottery picks face significant challenges when attempting a comeback after extended periods overseas. Mario Hezonja recently defied the odds. The Cleveland Cavaliers secured the Croatian player’s return to the NBA, signing him to a one-year deal at the veteran minimum, valued at $2.8 million. This marks Hezonja’s first NBA action since 2020.
Hezonja, often referred to as ‘Super Mario,’ gained attention when the Orlando Magic selected him as the fifth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Despite enormous expectations, his performance on the court did not match the early promise. During his five seasons with Orlando, New York, and Portland, Hezonja recorded averages of 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists over 330 games.
Rather than accept a label as another draft disappointment, Hezonja departed for Europe to reinvent his career. Playing for Real Madrid, he emerged as one of the continent’s top wings. He celebrated a EuroLeague title victory, earned Liga Endesa MVP honors last season, and secured his place among Europe’s basketball elite.
The Cavaliers view Hezonja’s signing as a minimal-risk decision with intriguing potential benefits. Standing at 6-foot-8, he spent the past six years performing at a high level away from the NBA spotlight. If Hezonja struggles upon his return, Cleveland can opt to release him without severe loss. However, if his European performance translates to the NBA, the Cavaliers may have landed a major offseason bargain.
While the Cavaliers missed out on acquiring LeBron James, they might have discovered unexpected value in Hezonja.
