New York Times reporter Jonathan Swan shared insights about President Donald Trump’s political ambitions and resilience during a “60 Minutes Australia” interview. Swan, alongside fellow Times reporter Maggie Haberman, discussed their book, “Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump.” He speculated on the president’s remaining term, urging journalists to maintain humility.
Swan stated, “Even if Democrats take the House, they can’t really touch him.” He highlighted Trump’s financial prosperity and the perceived immunity granted by the Supreme Court. Swan observed that many have prematurely written Trump’s political obituary, noting his survival skills and ability to reinvent himself. “He still has two and a half years left as the most powerful man and no intention of retreating,” Swan said.

Swan recalled a White House meeting where Trump showed them a document comparing himself to historical figures like Napoleon, Stalin, and Genghis Khan. “It was about power and raw power,” Swan said, noting Trump’s emphasis on historical influence over morality. Swan remarked that Trump seeks to be a “Napoleonic figure,” defining his era rather than comparing himself to past U.S. presidents.
The White House responded, stating, “President Trump fights daily to achieve a strong, safe, and prosperous nation. His legacy focus is on making America greater.” White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales reiterated this when commenting on Swan’s statements.
