Emporia Teacher Vows to Continue Advocacy Despite Arrest at Public Hearing

Lux Claridge, a physics teacher at Emporia High School, was arrested at a public hearing on July 22 due to alleged disruptions. The hearing focused on the proposed Flint Hills Digital Campus data center. Claridge, along with other attendees, received verbal warnings for disruptive conduct such as clapping in support of speakers opposing the project.

Despite being asked to leave the meeting, Claridge continued his actions and was removed by police, according to a statement from Emporia police. He was taken to Lyon County Jail with charges of interfering with law enforcement and disorderly conduct. Claridge posted bail and was released.

Claridge expressed that the arrest was inconvenient but affirmed his resolve to continue advocating against the data center. He stated his intention to plead not guilty and emphasized feeling relieved to return home. Footage from the meeting captured Claridge challenging an officer to “drag me out” before his arrest.

Jessica Danford, Claridge’s wife, accompanied him at the hearing and commented on the distress caused by witnessing his removal. Caleb Rankin, a friend, was surprised by the arrest and initially thought there was a mistake in identifying his friend.

David Claridge, Lux’s brother, expressed confidence that the charges would be dismissed and mentioned exploring methods for recalling the officials involved.

The arrest occurred amid growing controversies surrounding the expansion of data centers and AI facilities. Similar tensions have led to incidents across the nation, such as an attack on OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman’s residence. Calls for halting data center developments have echoed nationwide as communities evaluate their implications.

An anonymous meeting attendee voiced concerns about their First Amendment rights following the arrest. The participant emphasized that citizens are entitled to engage in constitutionally protected activities, a sentiment shared by others fearing government actions.

Emporia officials directed questions about the incident to the police. The Emporia Police Department maintains its commitment to conducting public meetings safely while upholding civic participation rights.
