Firefighters Struggle in France and Spain
In southwestern France, firefighters faced new flare-ups near the village of Blagon. Crews battled a massive wildfire four times the size of Paris, with temperatures expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). The ongoing heatwave, along with forecasted winds, pose challenges in containing the fire, which has displaced 220,000 people, according to Gironde region authorities.
Meanwhile, Spain anticipates its fourth summer heatwave, adding to multiple unchecked fires. Nonetheless, progress allowed authorities to lift some evacuation orders. Spain’s largest record-breaking blaze continues to burn, albeit with improvements in certain regions.

According to the European Union’s Copernicus climate service, Europe warms over twice the global average. June was the hottest on record, with dry conditions fueling fires in France and Spain.

Health officials advise staying indoors during wildfires. To maintain indoor air quality:

- Opt for HEPA portable air filters, avoiding models that produce ozone.

Wildfire smoke exposure can cause respiratory distress, including shortness of breath, chest tightness, and burning in the nose and eyes. Seek emergency care for severe symptoms.
Evacuees Face Uncertainty
Evacuees like Elvira Menéndez have endured uncertainty, staying in shelters away from their homes. The merged fires near Madrid and Ávila prompted Spain to declare a national fire emergency, causing extensive damage over 77,000 hectares.
Residents like Rocío Domínguez fled with only essentials, leaving behind personal belongings and memories.
Unique Weather Phenomena Exacerbate Fires
France’s wildfire produced a rare pyrocumulonimbus cloud, a self-generated thunderstorm fueled by the fire’s intensity. This cloud type causes new fires through lightning strikes and extreme winds. Such events have been more common in North America and Australia.
The French national firefighters federation reported this occurrence as unprecedented in the country.
Record Evacuations in France
Europe sees significant evacuations not seen since World War II. Morgane Bonichot and her daughter left their home near Bordeaux as fires spread. Authorities prioritize safety, preemptively evacuating towns between wildfires and Bordeaux.

While fires intensify in Europe and North America, global fire activity appears to decline. Africa and Asia report fewer fires due to changing practices and fire management. Despite Europe’s and North America’s struggles, global emissions from fires hit low levels in July.
