Wife of Chiefs Coach Eric Bieniemy Recovering After Shooting Incident

Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, is recovering outside of intensive care following a shooting at their home. Head coach Andy Reid announced the update during a news conference at the Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Reid shared that Mia Bieniemy, 57, is steadily improving after being shot by their adult son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, in Ashburn, Virginia. The incident occurred on Sunday night in their Northern Virginia residence.

She’s doing great. She’s doing better and great from where she was, out of the ICU unit and making progress, said Reid. EB (Eric Bieniemy) is still with her and that part’s important that that stays in place.

Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, was arrested on charges including malicious wounding and firearm offenses. The authorities have labeled the event as a domestic disturbance but have not disclosed a motive. A chaotic scene surrounded the incident with authorities capturing dramatic footage as they reached the Bieniemy home. Deputies removed the wounded Mia Bieniemy from the house, while other officers, with weapons drawn, approached the residence.

Mia Bieniemy managed to call 911 despite her injuries, Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman reported. According to a criminal complaint, Elijah Bieniemy used a .22-caliber Ruger to injure her left forearm and shoulder, with the projectile crossing her chest. Elijah is presently detained at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, awaiting his next court appearance on August 31.

Eric Bieniemy, 56, handles one of the top assistant coaching roles in professional football, leading the Kansas City offense with renowned players like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Rejoining the team remains uncertain, with the Chiefs’ exhibition season beginning on August 15 and their regular season starting September 14.

Reid stated they maintain regular contact with Eric Bieniemy, keeping him updated on team activities. He’s got the practice session tape, watching whatever spare time he’s got there, Reid mentioned.

Efforts to contact the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and Public Defender for additional comments on Wednesday were unsuccessful.
