Several immigrant business owners are preparing to take legal action against New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over his plan to establish city-owned grocery stores. This was confirmed by Fox News Digital on Wednesday.
The New York Post initially reported that the Multicultural Business Coalition (MBC) has decided to file a lawsuit against the city of New York. The city plans to open five grocery stores funded by taxpayers. These stores will offer products at prices up to 30% lower than traditional retailers.
Frank Garcia, Chairman of the MBC, stated that the coalition is planning to communicate with Mamdani’s office soon. They aim to outline their legal plans to safeguard competing stores, including bodegas and other small businesses. Should Mamdani fail to respond or engage with the organization within three weeks, further legal actions will be considered.
MBC Chairman Frank Garcia told Fox News Digital, “We’re ready to file the lawsuit if the mayor doesn’t meet with us.”
He added that the lawsuit aims to raise awareness about the challenges small business owners face due to rising costs in the city. Although the lawsuit hasn’t been filed, Garcia mentioned that lawyers are prepared to act after the three-week deadline, backed by strong support from other organizations.
Mamdani’s grocery store plan has sparked considerable concern among New York City bodega and business owners. Critics have described Mamdani’s initiative as a “communist fantasy.”
Formed earlier this year, the MBC opposes Mamdani’s initiative. It includes members from diverse business communities, including African, Asian, Caribbean, Hispanic, Jewish, and Middle Eastern backgrounds. The organization has gained support from various city and state lawmakers, including New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
The planned lawsuit follows Mamdani’s announcement of further details about the city-backed grocery stores. Additionally, Mamdani faces legal challenges from landlords intending to overturn a city-endorsed rent freeze.
