Las Vegas Aces center A’ja Wilson is widely considered the top player in women’s basketball today. Some even argue she is the best basketball player overall. Wilson herself doesn’t shy away from these discussions.
In an interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews aired on Thursday, July 30, Wilson described the experience. “It’s crazy,” she said. “When people say it, it’s truly crazy because you think about so many people on this list of GOATs. I just wouldn’t imagine my name being on it at this point in my career. I’m like, ‘Uh-uh, I still got so much to do. I still have to keep going. I want more.’ So when people say it, I’m like, thanks, but what?”
Wilson continued, “If I’m the GOAT, cool, I’m there. In my eyes, I’ve been the GOAT since ’96, so this is just a part of it.”
Wilson’s achievements back up her claim. She is the reigning WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, WNBA MVP, WNBA Finals MVP, and WNBA champion. Remarkably, she is the first player in league history to achieve all four in one season. As the 2018 No. 1 overall pick and an eight-time All-Star, she stands alone as a four-time MVP in WNBA history, showing no signs of slowing down.
As of Thursday, Wilson leads the WNBA in scoring with 26.2 points per game and blocks at 2.0 per game. She has averaged 26.2 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 1.6 steals in 25 games for the 19-8 Aces.
Las Vegas has claimed three of the last four WNBA titles and currently holds strong potential to capture another championship this season.
