The American League West division shows an intense competition this year. As August nears, the first-place team leads by 13 games ahead of the last, and 2.5 games ahead of the third. Currently, the Texas Rangers hold the top spot with a 55-54 record, a modest achievement considering they would only rank third in other divisions.
The Rangers boast a balanced offense, ranking 12th in the league with a .245 batting average. Not relying solely on homers, they sit 17th in that category. However, they must improve beyond their 23rd place in runs scored. Evidently, too many players are left on base.
Primarily, the Rangers focus on pitching with a solid rotation. This could make them formidable in the postseason. Tonight, Nathan Eovaldi is on the mound. His 10-8 record, 4.05 ERA, and 1.17 WHIP reflect a decent season, albeit slightly less successful than the last. He’s been consistent, typically allowing three or four earned runs in recent months. In his singular encounter with Houston this year, he conceded five earned runs over seven innings.

The Houston Astros, another contender in this tight race, also have 55 wins, standing half a game behind the Rangers with 55 losses. Despite the competitive position, World Series victory feels uncertain. Yordan Alvarez shines on the roster as an MVP-candidate driving much of the team’s success.
Rumors linger about potential trades from the Astros, though maintaining the current lineup could still lead to a strong bid for the division title. Hunter Brown will start for the Astros tonight after a year marked by injuries. In 47 innings, he has a 2-1 record with a 3.45 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP, showing a mix of quality and shorter starts.

Brown previously faced Texas, allowing three earned runs over six innings. Alvarez notably performs well against Eovaldi with 12 hits in 25 at-bats and five extra-base hits, suggesting good odds for more success today.

A bet on Alvarez achieving 2+ total bases seems reasonable given his record against Eovaldi. Despite starters’ strengths, both are susceptible to being hit, allowing the possibility for an entertaining game. Betting on the over 7.5 runs could prove favorable.
