Senator Cory Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, addressed the discovery that approximately 6,600 noncitizens were mistakenly deemed eligible to vote in New Jersey. He contended that this error does not justify the passage of the SAVE America Act, proposed by former President Donald Trump. Booker emphasized that the issue is not related to the absence of federal voter ID requirements.
“Nothing in the SAVE Act would have prevented a clerical error like we’ve seen in Texas, Oregon, and New Jersey,” Booker remarked, highlighting the need to safeguard voting systems.
New Jersey’s Democratic Governor, Mikie Sherrill, recently announced the removal of the noncitizens from voter rolls. These individuals were erroneously marked eligible to vote in the 2024 presidential election. Sherrill attributed the problem to a “serious software error” within New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System.

Amid this backdrop, Trump has urged Senate Republicans to pass the SAVE Act, but many GOP members are not in favor, and Democrats largely oppose it. Booker argued that the SAVE Act would prevent millions from voting, labeling it a “massive voter suppression bill.” He stressed that while election requirements should include proof of citizenship, such measures should be managed at the state level, even during federal elections.
“The states, as the Constitution says, should handle their voting issues,” Booker stated, adding that problems or legal violations should lead to prosecutions.
Currently, there is no national standard for identifying or reporting voting system errors like those in New Jersey, complicating efforts to assess the wider impact. Republicans advocating for the SAVE Act believe the legislation could help address and expose these issues.
“We’re going to manage the problems in New Jersey, but I dislike how this is being used to promote schemes that would harm Americans,” Booker concluded.
