At least 72 migrants have died in a tragic attempt to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, highlighting a severe border crisis in Europe. Over the weekend, Spanish authorities searched the waters near Ceuta for more victims. An estimated 50,000 to 60,000 migrants, mostly young men, surged into this small territory in North Africa. Many drowned during the crossing, and others died in a stampede near a barrier.
This large influx increased Ceuta’s population of approximately 84,000 by more than half. Although many migrants have returned to Morocco, some remain in Ceuta or evade authorities.
The incident has intensified political debates on immigration across Europe. In Spain, some far-right leaders demand stricter border security and the expulsion of migrants still in Ceuta. Santiago Abascal, head of Spain’s Vox party, criticized the government for what he termed “an invasion,” accusing officials of inadequate border protection.
Tensions heightened during a rally in Ceuta on Saturday when European Parliament member Alvise Pérez encountered hostile counterprotesters. Police escorted Pérez to safety.
Locals in Ceuta expressed condolences over the loss of life. “It’s painful that young people are perishing at sea,” said Karima Abenaz, a resident with Moroccan ties. She emphasized that seeking rights from the government is preferable to risking lives at sea.
Some locals argued that migrants should not be blamed. Mohamad Abdelkader Driss, a waiter in Ceuta, claimed that opening the border naturally encourages entrance, thus placing responsibility on authorities.
Ceuta, historically a city of diverse communities, faces challenges as concerns about security and the potential for future crossings arise.
The U.S. State Department advised against traveling to Ceuta, citing potential security risks due to the migrant surge. The advisory urged consideration of the “unpredictable and dangerous security situations” resulting from the influx.
