Kay Granger, a pioneering figure in Texas politics and a notable Republican leader, has passed away at the age of 83. Granger made history as the first female mayor of Fort Worth before embarking on a long and influential career in Congress. Her tenure extended for 28 years, during which she broke new ground by becoming the first woman in her party to chair the esteemed House Appropriations Committee.
Her political journey began with her significant election as Fort Worth’s first female mayor. This role set the stage for a distinguished career in the United States Congress, where she served for 14 terms. Her leadership and influence grew over the years, culminating in her appointment as the chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, a powerful position she held as the first woman from the Republican Party to do so.
Even until her final years, Granger remained actively involved in significant fiscal matters. Notably, she was present at key hearings, such as the one on June 14, 2023, which focused on fiscal 2024 spending bills.
