As a former assistant principal in Chicago, I noticed a dramatic change in job applications over the years. In the late 1990s, posting a job for a physics teacher would attract about 20 candidates. English teaching positions were even more popular, drawing around 150 applications. However, by the time I departed from the district, securing even one or two qualified candidates for these roles was challenging.
This shift underscores a broader trend that calls for serious attention. To address such issues, we must treat teaching as a profession worth entering.
