Miller, a two-term congressman and former White House aide under President Trump, has firmly rejected the abuse claims regarding his ex-wife and daughter. Newsweek sought comment from Miller’s spokesperson outside regular hours but received no response.
Moreno’s Call for Resignation
Bernie Moreno clashed with Miller on social media, urging him to resign. Moreno accused Miller of being unfit for the House of Representatives, to which Miller responded, citing political motives behind Moreno’s statements. Miller assured the public that private discussions concerning Emily Moreno’s mental health disproved the allegations.
The exchange preceded a ballot deadline that might prompt Miller to withdraw, potentially triggering a rapid replacement primary for his House seat. Miller maintained that accusations against him lacked substantiation in court proceedings, citing support from a court-appointed mediator.
Possible GOP Candidates
Republican insiders have considered several candidates should Miller step aside. Names include State Representative Mike Dovilla, a Navy veteran; former U.S. Representative Jim Renacci; State Representative Melanie Miller; and former State Senator Kevin Coughlin. Renacci, reflecting on his strong local network, noted interest in the seat if Miller exited. However, Renacci doubts Miller will withdraw.
Trump’s Involvement
Trump commented on Miller’s situation, empathizing with the embattled congressman and focusing on families resolving their matters. He warned Miller that reelection would be challenging, offering conditional verbal support. Miller requested a public endorsement from Trump, noting the president’s supportive stance during their phone conversation.
Miller Denies Allegations
Miller used a livestream to deny abuse allegations categorically, arguing that accusations harmed his family and reputation without legal validation. No criminal charges were filed, and he presented documents from his attorneys to counter accusations. Emily Moreno’s spokesperson criticized Miller’s responses as misleading and damaging, maintaining a documented history of Miller’s alleged abusive behavior.
