Scientists have captured the most detailed images of the sun’s surface to date, revealing its unique and shifting appearance. Normally, it’s not safe to look directly at the sun without protective eyewear. However, researchers succeeded in observing its hot surface using the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope. This facility is located on Maui island in Hawaii and is funded by the National Science Foundation.
The primary purpose of these images was to refine and test the telescope’s capabilities. Upon reviewing the images, researchers found they had achieved an unprecedented resolution of the sun’s outer layer. They also noticed unusual feathery patterns moving across the sun’s face.
This reminds me of famous paintings, like the swirling skies in Van Gogh’s Starry Night,
solar physicist Ruizhu Chen from Stanford University commented. Although Chen was not part of the study, he noted the artistic resemblance of these patterns.
The researchers identified ripples of instability on the sun, caused by magnetized plasma shifting at varying speeds. This phenomenon is similar to the waves created when wind passes over water and is a well-documented aspect of fluid dynamics. Friedrich Wöger, a study co-author from the National Solar Observatory, stated that this level of detail had never been observed on the sun before, though it has been seen on planets like Earth, Jupiter, and Saturn.
These findings were published in the journal Nature. Understanding the sun’s internal processes is crucial to better predict and track coronal mass ejections. These large energy bursts can travel towards Earth, potentially disrupting GPS and communication systems and creating colorful auroras.
