NATO reported a significant increase in the frequency of fighter jet scrambles in July compared to the same period last year. This escalation occurred along the alliance’s eastern flank.
On Wednesday, NATO officials highlighted that Russian military aircraft often approached NATO airspace without submitting a flight plan or activating their transponder signals. Consequently, NATO fighter jets were regularly dispatched to intercept these aircraft. Transponders relay crucial data about an aircraft, including its altitude and precise location.
Norwegian fighter jets, representing a NATO member, were deployed 62 times in response to Russian flights on NATO’s northeastern territory within the first half of 2026, as reported by Newsweek in July.
In the initial six months of this year, Oslo observed a higher frequency of Russian aircraft near its airspace than recorded in any full year since 2021. Although military aircraft frequently approach adversary territories, Russia’s deployment of advanced bombers near NATO borders is perceived as a tactic aimed at intimidation.
Additionally, The Wall Street Journal noted on Thursday that according to U.S. intelligence assessments, Russia might consider a “limited” attack on a NATO nation within the coming years.
