An Unlikely Friendship: How A Duck Became Essential to A Dog’s Recovery

Unusual Beginnings

Justin and Tori Cannarelli from New York have a family that includes two children, Cameron and Charlie, a dog, and an unexpected member: a duck. Tori shared with CBS News that she never anticipated owning a duck or the lasting presence it would have in their lives.

Louie the Duck Joins the Family

The Cannarellis were initially searching for a duck for Justin’s garden center. Through Facebook Marketplace, they encountered a duck that was hatched in a Long Island elementary school classroom. Rather than placing Louie the duck at the garden center, Tori decided to bring him home.

What was meant to be a temporary stay quickly turned into a permanent arrangement, especially due to the impact Louie had on Barley, the family’s golden retriever.

Barley’s Journey

A couple of years prior, Barley began experiencing seizures and was placed on medication. While the medication curbed the seizures, it altered her demeanor. “She just lost her spunk,” Tori noted, observing that the dog seemed to lose her vibrant spirit.

Justin expressed concerns about the lifelong need for medication and its effects on Barley. However, a change was noticed when Louie and Barley began to bond.

The Healing Bond

The duck and the dog developed a friendship, marked by playful interactions. Tori described this as a turning point, “She started smiling again. She started wagging her tail and showing personality.”

Today, Louie and Barley are almost inseparable. Whether pecking and chasing or wrestling and relaxing, their bond is undeniable.

The Cannarelli’s son, Cameron, shared his thoughts on the friendship. He speculates that Barley’s joy returned as she sought companionship with Louie, allowing her to feel more fulfilled.
