Royce White, a former NBA player, intends to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, declaring himself as transgender. This announcement follows Enes Kanter Freedom’s similar declaration. White told Fox News Digital of his plans, emphasizing his self-identification and intention to compete in women’s professional basketball.
Enes Kanter Freedom also declared for the WNBA Draft. Both former NBA stars argue their eligibility based on identity declarations. The WNBA’s 2026 collective bargaining agreement states eligibility requires players to be women, yet does not define the term or incorporate public policy on transgender or intersex inclusion.
“I’m transgender. I identify as a woman for the purpose of professional basketball,” White explained, stating that he aims to bring a strong skill set to the WNBA.
White would challenge the league’s policies if undrafted, citing discrimination concerns. He expressed desire for fair treatment as someone identifying as a transgender woman. His legal pursuit would focus on alleged discrimination should he remain unsigned.
A potential pick for the Minnesota Lynx, White expresses his eagerness to collaborate with coach Cheryl Reeve. He remarked on physical advantages, questioning WNBA players’ ability to guard him.
“How do you pass up a 6-foot-8, 270-pound point forward?” White questioned, highlighting his athletic capabilities.
White noted respect for women’s basketball, acknowledging his sister’s involvement in Division I collegiate sports. His past includes a successful draft into the NBA, where he played for the Houston Rockets.
Despite the league’s regulations, White and Freedom’s declarations highlighted ongoing debates regarding transgender athletes in women’s sports. The Women’s National Basketball Players Association affirmed its commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion without specifying eligibility guidelines.
White voiced curiosity about the criteria needed to qualify for the WNBA, asking if there were specific requirements such as altering appearance or voice. Both he and Freedom await clarity from the league regarding transgender applicant criteria.
