Carolina Panthers legend Steve Smith has voiced his thoughts on the ongoing issues surrounding San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. This mirrors the curiosity of many NFL fans who are uncertain about Aiyuk’s situation with the team.
Aiyuk’s disagreements with the 49ers began in 2024. The team voided his 2026 guaranteed salary due to unmet obligations related to his ACL injury rehabilitation from October 2024. His interactions with the team grew unusually strained, marked by odd social media activity over the last year.
“It’s a lot of things, but I have no idea what’s going on in that young man’s head,” Smith remarked during his appearance on OutKick’s “Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich.”
Smith hesitated to criticize Aiyuk publicly. He noted the need for someone to reach out and assist the 28-year-old receiver.
“There’s clearly something going on, and I don’t want to say in his head because that might sound judgmental,” Smith explained. “He needs someone to sit him down and discuss his real goals, as his current actions could be self-destructive.”
Aiyuk has been charged with a misdemeanor offense related to speeding. This was after he posted a video of himself speeding near the 49ers facility. On social media, he mentioned playing for the Washington Commanders, but a conflict with former teammate Jayden Daniels seems to have shut down those prospects. He also indirectly criticized head coach Kyle Shanahan following a car accident.
When asked about Aiyuk’s future in the NFL, Smith expressed uncertainty yet voiced hope that Aiyuk would act in time to salvage his career.
Aiyuk showed great potential in 2023 with 75 catches, 1,342 yards, and seven touchdowns. He secured a four-year, $120 million contract extension with the 49ers. In 2024, however, he appeared in only seven games before an ACL injury; his reputation has since been overshadowed by off-field incidents.
