Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, has reached its lowest water level since it was initially filled 90 years ago. This development highlights the ongoing crisis affecting the Colorado River system. On Friday, the water level at Lake Mead decreased to 1,040.4 feet (317.1 meters) above sea level, according to federal data. This figure is slightly below the previous low of 1,040.58 feet (317.27 meters) recorded on July 28, 2022. Lake Mead is situated along the Arizona-Nevada border near Las Vegas.
The record low follows a winter that saw the worst snowpack in the history of the Colorado River Basin. Melting snow is crucial for the river, which supports farmers, industries, wildlife, hydropower producers, and over 40 million people across seven U.S. states, tribal nations, and Mexico. This situation comes shortly after federal officials proposed a short-term plan to alleviate the deteriorating conditions of the waterway. Action was necessary because states relying on the river — California, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Utah — failed to agree on a long-term water-sharing strategy.
The proposal includes water cuts shared among California, Nevada, and Arizona. Overuse, together with drought and rising temperatures, has led to reduced levels in Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the country’s second-largest reservoir. Both lakes are currently at the lowest levels seen in nearly seventy years.
In order to maintain the system’s ability to generate hydropower, federal officials announced that they will not release cooler water from Lake Powell’s Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona. This decision aims to protect a native fish species, whose habitat lies between the two reservoirs.
The severe drought experienced in 2022 led to the exposure of human remains and forced water officials in Las Vegas to draw water from deeper within Lake Mead to ensure uninterrupted supply to millions.
