Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras faced an unusual reception from the Fenway Park crowd on Saturday. Contreras, returning to the lineup after missing two games due to an illness, was met with boos from fans. The reaction came after he did not run out a ground ball to third base, echoing from the batter’s box to the dugout tunnel.
Contreras had missed his previous game appearance because of the illness and reportedly continued to feel its effects over the weekend. Despite the crowd’s reaction, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy defended Contreras. Tracy explained on NESN, “I know how that looks but I’m also aware more than others that he’s a little beat up and told us before the game, ‘I don’t have everything today.’ So I’m fine. Especially with a guy that plays the game as hard as he does and how hard he turns around first base all the time, I’m fine with it.”
Contreras concluded the game with two strikeouts and one single. He chose not to address the media following the game. While the incident may seem noteworthy, the Red Sox are likely to move past it without further discussion. The team remains focused as their performance has been outstanding, boasting an impressive 27-5 record since July 1.
