The Las Vegas Raiders took decisive action by suspending quarterback Kirk Cousins and defensive end Maxx Crosby from team drills following a practice altercation. This decision opened the door for rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza to lead the starting offense for the first time during training camp.
Practice Expectations and Disciplinary Action
Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak expressed disappointment in the players’ conduct. “We have very clear expectations about how we want to practice, how you go about our business,” he stated. The confrontation appeared to stem from Cousins’ frustration over a tipped pass by Crosby. Both players were separated by teammates, and the team has addressed the incident internally.
The Raiders will resume practice on Monday, with Kubiak hoping for conflict-free play between Cousins and Crosby.
Mendoza’s First-Team Debut
With Cousins on the sidelines, Fernando Mendoza seized his chance to run the first-team offense. The former Heisman Trophy winner from Indiana demonstrated potential with touchdown passes to tight ends Brock Bowers, Michael Mayer, and wide receiver Tre Tucker. Despite some errors, Mendoza showed agility and skill in managing the starting defense’s pressure.
Quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan praised Mendoza’s progress, noting improvements in areas targeted during the spring. “He’s not repeating mistakes, which is always a good thing,” Sullivan said.
Mendoza’s opportunity comes as the Raiders prepare to face the Arizona Cardinals in their preseason opener. Though no official lineup decisions have been made, Mendoza’s performance on Saturday could influence his participation. Kubiak has indicated Mendoza will eventually helm the first-team offense this season.
Injury Report
The Raiders received positive news with wide receiver Jalen Nailor’s return to practice after sitting out for an unspecified injury. However, several players remained absent, including defensive ends Kwity Paye, Keyron Crawford, and wide receiver Dont’e Thornton Jr.
Caleb Rogers, vying for a spot at right guard, had a brief injury scare with his left arm or elbow but managed to return. He reassured, saying, “I feel great.”
