James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Texas, has gained attention due to a past interview. Talarico, who serves as a state representative and Presbyterian seminarian, is challenging Republican Ken Paxton for a critical Senate seat.
In a June 2023 interview on the “Weekly Witness” show by Texas Impact, Talarico shared his belief that his faith drives his political career. He stated, “Christianity is just another word for causing trouble,” citing his church’s progressive actions as an influence. Among these actions, he mentioned sheltering an undocumented family facing deportation by ICE, advocating for LGBTQ rights in the ’90s, and welcoming an atheist to his church in the 2000s. Talarico’s journey also includes teaching public school students in San Antonio and running an education nonprofit.
Talarico invoked his faith to defend abortion rights, noting that “the Bible is silent on abortion.” He emphasized that “justice is just love out in public.”
During the interview, Talarico criticized what he called “Christo-fascism” and the religious right for attempting to impose a specific type of Christianity. Examples he cited include laws requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in public schools, replacing counselors with chaplains, and banning specific medical procedures for children. Talarico argued that these movements misuse faith to exert power and marginalize groups in Texas.
The resurfaced interview sparked Republican criticism. The Republican National Committee’s Zach Kraft labeled Talarico “a dangerous man” for allegedly supporting policies that weaken border security and law enforcement. JT Ennis, a spokesperson for Talarico, countered by emphasizing Talarico’s commitment to the teachings of Jesus and his support for law enforcement and border security. Ennis accused political opponents of misrepresenting Talarico’s views.
Despite the backlash, Talarico leads Paxton in a recent poll. Republicans, including Paxton, believe that Talarico’s progressive views might eventually harm his political prospects. Paxton’s campaign spokeswoman Madison Cercy accused Talarico of practicing a form of Christianity that supports controversial social policies. She argued that Talarico’s form of faith is not aligned with traditional values held by many Texans.
Paxton acknowledged Talarico’s lead in the race but expressed confidence in rallying support as the election approaches. He suggests that voters will make an informed decision once they learn more about Talarico.
