The recent confirmation of Todd Blanche as the attorney general of the United States underscores the significant shift in the Overton window, the spectrum of acceptable ideas, regarding the Department of Justice under President Donald Trump.
During last month’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, Blanche’s nomination encountered a significant hurdle. Senators Tom Tillis and John Cornyn insisted that Blanche assure them he would abandon the president’s initiative to create a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund.” This fund was intended to support individuals allegedly targeted by federal authorities.
Although Blanche initially hesitated, he eventually issued a cautious statement communicating that the fund “is not moving forward.” Despite this assurance, a decision remains to protect members of President Trump’s family from IRS audits. Blanche also submitted a “binding written document,” as a representative for Cornyn described it, clarifying who would be included in this provision.
Following this commitment, both Tillis and Cornyn expressed their satisfaction and support for Blanche’s confirmation.
