Two custodians were discovered shot to death on Monday at a Chicago elementary school. Reports indicate one custodian allegedly killed the other before turning the gun on himself. The Chicago Police Department identified the victims as a 48-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man. Both were found unresponsive at Mark Twain Elementary School shortly after 3:30 p.m. and had each sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
The victims were transported to local hospitals where they were pronounced dead. An unspecified weapon was recovered at the scene. The school’s principal, Matthew Moline, confirmed the tragic events in a letter to parents. He noted that the shooting occurred when no students were present in the building.
SEIU Local 73, the union representing Chicago Public Schools’ custodial staff, verified that both victims were employees at Mark Twain Elementary School. Executive Vice President Trumaine Reeves expressed condolences, stating, “The only facts we know right now are that two families have lost a loved one, and our prayers are with their families, and the staff, students, and families at Mark Twain Elementary School.”
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the older custodian was upset about an imminent transfer from the school, which allegedly led to the shooting. Further details will be provided to the school community as the investigation continues, according to Moline.
