Jets’ New Player Performance Center: A Holistic Approach

The New York Jets are significantly upgrading their Player Performance Center, marking a pivotal shift in their training strategy. Team owner Woody Johnson has dedicated substantial resources to enlarge and enhance the facilities for the upcoming season.

“We are investing in a dynamic training staff experienced in advanced performance systems to support our players,” Johnson stated. “Our facilities will be 250% larger, improving training capacity and centralizing strength, conditioning, recovery, and nutrition.”

This extensive expansion includes state-of-the-art technologies such as vibroacoustic recovery pods, AI-powered player performance apps, and more. While these tools are impressive, Erik Korem, the Jets’ director of player performance, emphasizes a broader vision.

Building a Holistic System

Korem describes the initiative as creating a comprehensive health and performance system. This involves improving departments like strength and conditioning, nutrition, sports science, and recovery. The integration of data and AI aims to craft a seamless experience for both players and staff.

The initiative, known as Phase 2 of the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center renovation, aims beyond expanding physical space. It reshapes how players transition from assessment to practice to recovery, ensuring all elements of training function in harmony.

Personalized Training Programs

The Jets’ new center promises a tailored approach to training. Every player receives individualized attention based on frequent assessments. For instance, different players have diverse requirements concerning mobility, strength, or speed. A custom app organizes these inputs, enabling the staff to make precise recommendations.

The more tools you have and the more data collected serially, the better you can refine training programs, Korem explained. This requires consistent and reliable data collection over time, allowing the experts to track an athlete’s progress accurately.

Integrating Recovery and Nutrition

Along with training, the Jets emphasize recovery and nutrition. Players transition from high-energy states post-training to relaxing states. Innovative tools like the TERSA SAVA Sound Pod aid in this transition with music and vibrations promoting calmness.

The training center also features the Ammortal Chamber, which combines multiple recovery modalities. Korem believes using several recovery methods simultaneously can align with the players’ tight schedules.

The dining philosophy follows the same individualized principle. Under Carmen Spencer, the nutrition team collaborates with chefs to offer varied meals like salmon, chicken dishes, and poke bowls to meet different player needs and occasions.

According to Korem, the focus is on what enhances performance. This could mean adapting the diet based on when and what players require, such as whole grains or quick-digesting carbohydrates.

This renovation aligns with feedback from the NFL Players Association, which previously reflected low satisfaction with the Jets’ facilities. The current work addresses these concerns with expanded nutrition and performance services.

Continued Commitment Beyond the Gym

The Jets understand that technology alone will not win games. Practicing the required skills and conditioning remains a primary part of training. The performance center offers enhanced tools, but Korem insists the vital work occurs on the field.

“The thing that matters most is: what do you do with these tools?” Korem asks. Ultimately, the investment’s success will depend on how the staff leverages the technology and resources provided.

The aim is a holistic performance center where the combination of expert staff and advanced tools fosters a better training environment for Jets players.
