The U.S. Marshals have announced the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect in Colorado tied to the murder of Billy Schmidt, a Penn State student. Philadelphia police confirm both teenage suspects will face adult charges for the robbery and shooting that occurred on June 6. The second suspect, Kaiseem Smith, is still at large, and authorities have issued a wanted notice.
Billy Schmidt, 22, was killed during an attempted robbery at approximately 1:30 a.m. on June 6. Officers discovered Schmidt with a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at 1:47 a.m.
Philadelphia police have identified 19-year-old Khadfi Fleming as being involved in the theft of a vehicle belonging to an off-duty officer. Fleming is also considered a person of interest in Schmidt’s murder.
An ongoing search is underway for the suspects involved in Schmidt’s tragic death.
Authorities reported that around 70th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard, a red Lexus was seen traveling without headlights, shadowed by a dark SUV. Two individuals were observed approaching the Lexus before shots were fired. The suspects later stole a green Dodge Charger from an off-duty police officer who had attempted to intervene.
Surveillance footage reportedly captures Schmidt pursuing the suspects demanding his phone. The video depicts a phone on the ground and moments later, a gunshot is heard.
Police have circulated video footage of the suspects linked with Schmidt’s murder. Fleming’s younger sibling and another teenager surrendered to police in Colorado earlier in June.
Schmidt was attending Penn State World Campus for journalism and was expected to graduate in December.
