A Georgia elementary school teacher, Derrick Moore, tragically lost his life while rescuing a young girl from a rip current at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The incident happened near 10th Avenue South at approximately 7:53 p.m. on a Friday evening, as reported by the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
Moore, 47, managed to save the young girl from the strong current but was subsequently pulled under the water himself. The event took place after the lifeguards had completed their shifts for the day.
Derrick Moore, a beloved teacher and father from Georgia, is now remembered as a hero.
Following the incident, police and firefighters conducted a search operation, continuing into the next day. The search ended when Moore’s body was discovered washed ashore and was recovered by authorities.
His daughter shared with WRAL that Moore did not know the girl he saved but took the brave decision to help nonetheless. “We loved him and are truly heartbroken that he’s gone,” she stated. “He was a great father and we are all going to miss him.” Moore leaves behind four children.
In the wake of his passing, tributes poured in from friends, former teammates, and family members. They mourned Moore as a devoted father and a selfless individual whose last act was a true reflection of his nature.
Moore taught at Rockbridge Elementary School in Georgia, where he was fondly referred to as “Coach” by his students. Previously, he worked at Jolly Elementary School. The DeKalb County School District expressed their sorrow over Moore’s death, affirming the meaningful impact he made on students, families, colleagues, and the community.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also honored Moore. He conveyed his condolences and requested prayers for Moore’s family and the DeKalb County community as they grieve.
Moore was not only known for his teaching; he was also an athlete during his college years. He graduated from Samford University in 2001, with a record in both football and track and field. The university expressed their sorrow at his passing and acknowledged him as a “beloved teacher” and “true hero.”
Friends and former teammates reminisced about Moore’s character, emphasizing his tendency to be present for others. A family member captured the essence of Moore’s selflessness by highlighting his last heroic act, which cost him his life but saved a child in need.
