Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley secured the Democratic nomination for governor of Wisconsin. The Associated Press confirmed his victory over state Rep. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist challenging the party’s establishment.
Crowley’s campaign faced challenges, including low poll numbers and insufficient funds. He initially suspended his campaign but re-entered the race with support from outgoing Democratic Gov. Tony Evers. This move aimed to counter Hong’s growing momentum.
Despite a series of wins for progressives in other primaries, Hong’s narrow defeat indicates that Democratic voters in Wisconsin are seeking change. If successful in the fall, Crowley, 40, could become the state’s first Black governor.
Facing Republican Opposition
In the general election, Crowley will face U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany. Tiffany, endorsed by former President Trump, won his party’s primary by a wide margin. Known for his conservative track record, Tiffany has distanced himself from Trump, focusing on portraying himself as a relatable Wisconsinite and a steady alternative to what he calls ‘Democratic chaos.’
Republicans aim to capture the governor’s seat in the upcoming election. Meanwhile, Democrats strive to maintain their hold, also eyeing the possibility of winning at least one legislative chamber currently controlled by the GOP.
Campaign Dynamics
Crowley’s supporters view him as a more viable candidate than Hong, whose past remarks on defunding police and abolishing prisons could have provided Republicans with significant attack opportunities. After relaunching his campaign, Crowley raised nearly three times more funds than he had managed during the entire first year.
He claimed that national Republican-aligned groups spent millions to support Hong, hoping to face a less formidable opponent in the general election.
Crowley’s Background
Crowley resisted labels as an establishment alternative, emphasizing his roots in Milwaukee’s inner city. He experienced eviction and witnessed drug addiction within his family, driving his political journey. Crowley worked with Democratic U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold’s 2010 campaign and later joined the state Assembly. In 2020, he became Milwaukee’s youngest and first Black county executive.
