David Crowley narrowly secured victory in a tight primary, positioning himself against Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany for the Wisconsin governor’s race. Crowley, who faced democratic socialist Francesca Hong, achieved a surprising win that defied predictions. This sets up a significant contest with Tiffany, a supporter of former President Donald Trump.
Crowley plans to build a broad coalition to counter Tiffany by emphasizing Tiffany’s connections to Trump’s movement. He stated, “This isn’t establishment versus progressive. This is Democrats defeating a MAGA extremist in Congressman Tom Tiffany, and that’s what we should focus on.”
Scott Walker, former Republican Governor and Trump supporter, noted that Tiffany could shift focus from Trump to local governance in his campaign. He highlighted the importance of discussing who will lead the state for the next four years.
However, former Republican state Senate Majority Leader Dale Schultz stated that Crowley’s candidacy complicates Tiffany’s campaign by bringing attention to key issues such as healthcare costs and affordability.
Tiffany represents a conservative rural region in Wisconsin. Trump previously claimed victories in the state, with both wins decided by narrow margins. Crowley’s primary win further underscores Wisconsin’s reputation for close elections.
Democrats Target Full Control in Wisconsin
Democrats are focusing on winning the governor’s office and flipping the Legislature to gain complete control in Wisconsin, a goal not achieved since 2010. With Trump’s approval ratings declining, Democrats see an opportunity to challenge Tiffany effectively.
Tiffany began his campaign by tying Crowley to his primary opponent, Hong, saying, “There’s not a dime’s worth of difference between these Democrat candidates.” It’s crucial for Crowley to engage young voters who supported Hong to maintain momentum.
Crowley’s Rise and Challenges
Crowley’s path to nomination was unexpected. At 40, Crowley highlights his background, growing up in poverty in Milwaukee with a family facing challenges such as eviction and mental health issues. He was elected to the state Assembly in 2016, and by 2023, he collaborated successfully with a Republican-led Legislature for more state aid to local areas.
Initially withdrawing from the race in July, he re-entered with backing from Democratic Governor Tony Evers. Crowley argues he presents a stronger challenge to Tiffany. His victory makes him the first Black nominee for Wisconsin governor.
At a unity event, Crowley addressed supporters, emphasizing the continued work needed, stating, “This historic moment is not lost on me. But I’m not even thinking about that because we’ve still got work to do.”
