Murdaugh’s Request for Venue Change
South Carolina prosecutors are pushing back against Alex Murdaugh’s demand to shift his trial to Charleston. They describe the “Charleston or bust” stance by the defense as logistically complex and overly costly.
This week, in a court filing, the state requested that the court deny Murdaugh’s effort to establish Charleston as the only feasible venue. While Charleston is celebrated for tourism and industry, it poses significant challenges for hosting a trial of this scale, according to state officials.
The trial for Murdaugh is tentatively set for April 2027.
Logistical Concerns Highlighted
Prosecutors submitted a list of logistical concerns, highlighting existing issues like downtown Charleston’s traffic and parking. The influx of jurors, media, and witnesses would exacerbate these problems.
They noted that the spring tourist season and Masters week would substantially increase hotel costs. Additionally, severe spring weather could flood downtown areas, complicating transportation.
Alternative Venue Options
The defense argues for relocation due to the publicity and prior trial attention. However, prosecutors argue that neighboring counties, such as Spartanburg, York, or Florence, could serve as alternatives. Murdaugh is not automatically entitled to a venue change due to media coverage alone.
Defense Arguments for Charleston
The defense team emphasizes extensive local public interest and family connections as reasons for moving the trial to Charleston. They also cite concerns over courthouse misconduct in Colleton County.
A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Murdaugh at the Lexington County Courthouse this Friday at 10 a.m.
