Democrats’ prospects of retaining the Wisconsin governor’s office have improved significantly in prediction markets. This follows the victory of moderate Democrat David Crowley in the gubernatorial primary against progressive state Representative Francesca Hong. Crowley aims to be Wisconsin’s first Black governor, narrowly defeating Hong by presenting himself as the candidate most suitable to oppose U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany, who secured President Donald Trump’s endorsement and won the Republican primary.
Crowley re-entered the race with outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers’ endorsement after initially leaving in early July. Prior to the primary, prediction markets showed Republicans favored to flip the governorship, as Hong was anticipated to be the nominee. Public polls indicated Hong’s significant lead over Crowley and other contenders. However, Crowley’s victory, confirmed by the Associated Press, shifted prediction markets to favor Democrats in the November election.
At 8 a.m. Eastern time, Kashi prediction market assigned Democrats a 78 percent chance of holding the governor’s seat, up from 39.4 percent on Sunday. Republicans’ chances declined to 22 percent, from 61.8 percent on the same day. Polymarket mirrored this trend, giving Democrats a 77 percent likelihood of victory, up from 41 percent a day earlier. Predictions for Republicans fell to 22 percent, down from 51 percent the previous Monday.
Prediction markets engage traders to buy and sell contracts linked to political outcomes. These markets offer probability estimates based on real‑money transactions, reacting to polling, fundraising, candidate developments, and broader political trends. They gauge trader sentiment but don’t always predict future results accurately.

Both Candidates Must Appeal to Independents
To win in November, Crowley and Tiffany need to attract moderate and independent voters. Wisconsin’s history of tight election margins makes these voters crucial.
Crowley’s campaign manager, Garren Randolph, expressed Crowley’s focus on uniting people and gaining support from a broad spectrum of voters who believe in collaborative success in Wisconsin.
In his victory speech, Tiffany reached out to various political affiliations, stating that his commonsense movement welcomed all who seek prosperity for future generations.
Mainstream Support Boosts Crowley
Crowley’s win followed endorsements from mainstream Democrats concerned that Hong’s left-leaning stance might struggle among moderates and independents in November.
Jim Kessler from Third Way explained that skepticism towards Hong reflected a structural reality in governor races rather than specific bias. Governors face unique scrutiny regarding taxes, businesses, schools, and safety.
While Hong invigorated progressive voters, national figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders did not endorse her, focusing on broader congressional and Senate victories.
