Democratic Party’s Leftward Shift Raises Concerns

A former associate of Bernie Sanders has raised concerns about the direction of the Democratic Party, claiming that the far-left has gained significant influence. Evan Barker, who previously supported Democratic candidates, voiced these concerns on ‘Jesse Watters Primetime.’

Barker attributed the shift to the Democratic establishment’s efforts to marginalize progressive voices, especially after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (AOC) victory in 2019. These attempts backfired, leading to a strengthened far-left faction within the party. Activists have since focused on developing a political infrastructure, securing support from both grassroots and wealthy donors.

Barker highlighted that the party is increasingly shaped by left-leaning activists, donors, and staffers, some of whom hold more radical views than the politicians themselves.

Barker noted shifts in Bernie Sanders’ positions on various issues, indicating increased influence from progressive figures like AOC, Ilhan Omar, and Abdul El-Sayed.

The rise of a new wave of progressive candidates, such as Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, showcases the growing impact of these factions within the Democratic Party. El-Sayed recently secured the Democratic nomination, and other candidates backed by progressives have won key primaries across the country.

Barker shared that the Democratic Party’s transition to the left led her to leave, contrasting the current movement with the Democratic ideals during Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. She pointed out significant changes in the party’s stance on issues like immigration, identity politics, and law enforcement.

Former President Joe Biden’s decision not to run in 2024 and Kamala Harris’ nomination had further confirmed Barker’s view of the party’s evolution.
