The Department of Justice’s anti-fraud task force recently achieved a significant success in Pennsylvania by exposing extensive Medicaid fraud. This operation follows similar incidents in Minnesota but with notable differences. In Pennsylvania, both Republicans and Democrats have united in their concern over the fraud revelations.
In recent operations, almost two dozen individuals faced charges for Medicaid fraud in Philadelphia and nearby areas. The state of Pennsylvania invests around $8 billion in Medicaid home-care services, which ranks among the highest in the country. House Ways & Means Committee member Lloyd Smucker, R-Pa., described the situation as deeply troubling during an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital.
“The allegations are really disturbing just as they are in Minnesota and other places where we’ve seen this,” said Smucker.
Smucker emphasized that these fraudulent activities harm those genuinely in need, as Medicaid is critical for disabled individuals. His district in Lancaster has a significant number of residents depending on Medicare, Medicaid, or both.
The DOJ anti-fraud chief provided examples of fraudulent acts. One defendant submitted false claims to Medicaid for services supposedly rendered during a police stop. Another billed while present in court for a relative’s hearing on Medicaid fraud charges.
Pennsylvania’s Governor Josh Shapiro has pledged collaboration with Republicans to tackle Medicaid fraud. The state’s high number of convictions for such fraud shows a commitment to accountability. In a recent statement, Shapiro emphasized Pennsylvania’s leadership in combating fraud, pointing out that in 2024, 119 fraud cases led to the recovery of over $11 million.
Rosie Lapowsky, a spokesperson for Shapiro, highlighted his ongoing commitment to fighting fraud. During his tenure, numerous cases were referred to the justice department for thorough investigation.
The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) plays a significant role in monitoring home-care service providers to prevent fraud. DHS utilizes advanced verification systems and collaborates closely with the state Attorney General David Sunday’s office to prosecute fraudulent activities. Last year, Sunday’s office recovered over $40 million through successful prosecutions.
Smucker urges continued vigilance against fraud in both Medicaid and Medicare. Pennsylvania remains committed to rooting out fraudsters through the efforts of the DOJ’s Northeast Strike Force and other agencies.
DEA Philadelphia chief Timothy Flaherty reiterated the focus on holding greedy providers accountable, ensuring taxpayer funds serve those truly in need.
