Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Trump, held discussions with Hamas leaders in Egypt on Sunday. The talks centered around a U.S.-backed peace initiative, aiming for the disarmament of Hamas and a transition to a new government.
According to a source familiar with the meeting, the goals included sustaining the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, transferring governing responsibilities to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, ensuring Hamas exits any governance role, facilitating Israeli withdrawals, and deploying an international stabilizing force.
The plan negotiated by Mr. Trump’s international Board of Peace must result in practical actions, said the source.
The meeting included Khalil al-Hayya from Hamas and was confirmed by anonymous officials. Last month, Trump declared an agreement on the complete disarmament of Hamas. Yet, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the plan, demanding genuine disarmament of Hamas before any military withdrawal.
Kushner also met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi regarding the Gaza ceasefire’s implementation. He plans to visit Israel to discuss the situation with Netanyahu.
Acknowledging the meeting, a source emphasized the need for clarity. Hamas must relinquish its military capabilities, ensuring Gaza is not a threat to Israel. Regional powers including Saudi Arabia and the UAE criticized Israel’s rejection of the peace plan.
They issued a statement holding Israel accountable for obstructing peace efforts in Gaza. Other signatories included Jordan, Pakistan, Indonesia, and other ceasefire mediators. The statement urged the U.S. and the Board of Peace to prevent any blockage of the agreement.
The peace plan dictates Israeli forces will withdraw from Gaza as disarmament progresses, with security under an International Stabilization Force and a new Palestinian police force. Since the ceasefire in October 2025, Israeli operations in Gaza have led to over 1,200 deaths, according to the Hamas-run Palestinian Health Ministry.
