Aaron Donald’s Potential Return Concerns NFC West Quarterbacks

The NFC West quarterbacks, including Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers, Sam Darnold from the Seattle Seahawks, and Arizona Cardinals’ Jacoby Brissett, are uneasy at the news that Aaron Donald might rejoin the Los Angeles Rams this season. Donald, a former three-time Defensive Player of the Year, has been enjoying retirement for two years. However, the Rams’ recent acquisition of reigning sack leader Myles Garrett has sparked Donald’s interest in an NFL return.

Donald’s possible return causes worry for all NFC quarterbacks who may face not only Donald but also Garrett. During an appearance on the podcast “Green Light With Chris Long,” Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff—Donald’s former Rams teammate—expressed concern over possibly encountering the future Hall of Famer during playoffs.

“How many snaps a game you think he gives the Rams this year if he comes back?” Chris Long questioned.

“Hopefully zero,” Goff replied humorously. “In that playoff game, we beat [the Rams] and I’m like, ‘We did it; Aaron’s done. I don’t have to see him ever again.’ And he’s like, ‘Hold on, I might come back.’ So, we’ll see. If he comes back, I’m sure he’ll help them a lot. We might see them in the playoffs, and I can’t say enough good things about him.”

Goff and Donald played together for the Rams from 2016 to 2020, achieving three playoff appearances and a Super Bowl appearance in those five years. Since Goff’s trade to Detroit in 2021, he has played against Donald and the Rams twice, with a 1-1 record. His sole triumph was a 24-23 playoff victory in 2023, marking Donald’s last game prior to his retirement declaration.
