BBC Seeks Subpoenas for Trump Family in Defamation Lawsuit

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has approached a Florida court seeking subpoenas for members of former President Trump’s family as part of its defense against a $10 billion defamation lawsuit filed by Mr. Trump. According to recent court documents, the BBC has asked the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Florida for approval to subpoena Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner. These subpoenas aim to gather testimonies and documents related to the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The BBC argues that these individuals possess crucial knowledge and possibly hold records relevant to multiple aspects of Mr. Trump’s allegations against the broadcaster. The court has given Mr. Trump’s legal team a deadline until Friday to respond to this request.

Efforts to reach Mr. Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito, for comments did not meet with immediate responses. However, a spokesperson for Mr. Trump’s legal team criticized the BBC, accusing it of harassment and alleging the broadcaster is misusing the legal process.

In December, Mr. Trump filed the lawsuit against the BBC, accusing it of defamation and unfair trade practices. The allegations focus on the editing of Mr. Trump’s speech in a 2024 BBC documentary, suggesting the network deliberately misrepresented the speech to imply he incited violence. Mr. Trump’s legal representatives emphasize that a vital part of his speech, a statement calling for peace, was omitted.

While the BBC issued an apology for the editing last year, it maintains that the video does not support a defamation claim. Attempts to serve subpoenas to Mr. Trump’s children and son-in-law began in May but were unsuccessful. At one point, local law enforcement and the Secret Service prevented serving the subpoenas at Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s residence.

Additional attempts to serve Donald Trump Jr. at Trump Tower were hampered by building staff, with representatives citing the absence of relevant personnel. The BBC contends that these family members are essential witnesses, referencing documents from the U.S. Congress that place Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump in the Oval Office during crucial moments on January 6.

Kushner is noted to have drafted a statement condemning the violence, while records also show Donald Trump Jr.’s direct communication with his father following the Capitol breach. The BBC, a partner of CBS News, declined further comment on the case.
