Aurora Community Back to School Bash Offers Support

Shawntaya Dell from Aurora is preparing her three children for school, welcoming assistance in acquiring school supplies. ‘This event helps with school supplies – it’s definitely some extra help,’ Dell remarked on Sunday afternoon during the annual Aurora Community Back to School Bash at Wilder Park. Many gathered there despite the event’s initial location at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park being changed due to unfavorable conditions.

The event, supported by Aurora Ald. Javier Banuelos of the 7th Ward, the African American Men of Unity, and the Community Center of Hometown, featured music, food, games, and crucially, school supplies for attendees. Originally scheduled at another location, it was moved to Wilder Park to avoid soggy grounds, a decision made Saturday midday.

Banuelos emphasized the event’s importance in the community. ‘Getting families help with school supplies is essential. Not everyone can afford to buy them, and this event allows us to give back,’ he said. ‘Many donations came from the East Aurora School District, and Main Baptist Church in Ward 7 also contributed.’

Ivan Ribas of Aurora shared his thoughts on the change of venue and the event’s significance. ‘I heard about the change on social media but this new location is a blessing. These events support families who can’t afford basic supplies,’ Ribas stated, noting the high cost of items like book bags.

Kirsy Velasquez, attending with her son Kairos Ortiz, 10, expressed gratitude for the bash. ‘This event is beneficial for families like mine, especially since I’m a single mom with two children. It helps us get the supplies we need without extra expenses.’ She, along with many others, stood in long lines for supplies and food, highlighting the event’s positive impact.
