In a recent announcement, renowned Colombian singer Shakira has committed to aiding the reconstruction of at least 10 schools and a local university in western Colombia. This initiative comes in response to a powerful earthquake that recently struck the region, causing significant damage and loss of life.
During a surprise visit to Quibdó, Chocó’s capital, Shakira expressed her concerns regarding the restoration of educational facilities, saying, “What worries me the most is that schools are not rebuilt once this emergency is over.” Her visit included touring damaged schools, where she interacted with students.
Shakira’s efforts will receive support from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, as Howard Buffett, son of billionaire Warren Buffett, has a history of collaboration with her on educational projects in Colombia. The partnership with Shakira’s Barefoot Foundation aims to restore the educational infrastructure severely impacted by the disaster.
The earthquake, which occurred on August 10, had a magnitude of 7.4. It resulted in at least 287 deaths and extensive property damage, including the destruction of more than 26,000 homes. The epicenter of the quake was in Chocó, a region facing economic challenges and marked by poverty.
Shakira also announced financial commitments for the rebuilding efforts, mentioning $500,000 pledges from both the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund and Live Nation, along with $250,000 from the CAF Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. These funds are designated to assist in reopening schools and resuming education for affected children.
The earthquake’s impact on Chocó is exacerbated by the region’s limited infrastructure. Transport within Chocó relies heavily on rivers and unpaved roads due to minimal connectivity with the rest of the country. The region is also home to many Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities.
In addition to rebuilding schools, Shakira expressed a strong commitment to restoring a local technological university. Her foundation has been active in Chocó for over two decades, focusing on youth education with two established schools in the area.
Shakira’s dedication to education is consistent with her career-long support of educational initiatives. At 49, she remains active in philanthropic efforts, further highlighted by her recent appearances and performances, including the World Cup halftime show.
Other Latin American artists, such as Marc Anthony and Karol G, have also participated in fundraising efforts to support earthquake recovery in Colombia and Venezuela.
