On August 18, Ukrainian forces launched one of the most significant drone assaults on Russia since the outset of Moscow’s invasion over four years ago. Officials noted that Ukraine fired nearly 800 drones shortly after executing a similar operation.
Concurrently, a Russian missile attack on a village in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region resulted in at least 10 fatalities and eight injuries. The strike destroyed several homes, further escalating the ongoing aerial duel between the two nations.
Russia and Ukraine are embroiled in an intensifying conflict involving long-range aerial strikes. The roughly 780-mile front line in eastern and southern Ukraine is heavily influenced by the presence of drones and ground robots, which restrict troop movements. This analysis comes from military experts monitoring the conflict.

In the past year, Ukraine has developed its own long-range drones to target areas deep inside Russia. The advancements in Ukraine’s drone technology have caught the attention of defense manufacturers and governments worldwide.
Kyiv aims to impact the Russian populace with these operations, attempting to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in peace talks. Despite these efforts, Putin has yet to indicate any intention of withdrawing from the conflict.
“Putin continues to drag out the war instead of accepting Ukraine’s realistic ceasefire proposals and ending the bloodshed,” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on social media.
Russia reported its air defenses intercepted 791 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions. This included Crimea and the Black and Azov seas. The Defense Ministry noted this as the second-largest drone attack since early 2025.
Over 600 Ukrainian drones targeted the Moscow region, with 180 intercepted, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin who provided no additional specifics.
Authorities noted that there were no fatalities or major damages reported. However, in the Moscow region, excluding the capital, three individuals sustained injuries, Governor Andrei Vorobyov stated.
The overnight strike ignited a fire at a Wildberries warehouse in an industrial zone. Ukraine targets the company’s facilities, asserting they supply the Russian military.

In Ukraine, a Russian missile strike on the village of Pechenihy in the Kharkiv region killed 10 civilians, according to initial reports from Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration. An additional 17 people suffered injuries.
President Zelenskyy denounced the strike as “a brutal attack,” damaging 10 homes, a cafe, a post office, a store, and several vehicles, as per Syniehubov’s account.
“We will definitely respond to this Russian strike,” President Zelenskyy stated on social media.
Elsewhere, three individuals were killed and another three wounded from Russian attacks in Ukraine’s Sumy region. These included drone strikes and an explosive device blast, reported by Ukraine’s National Police.
