Those using the oral glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications, such as Wegovy tablets, should avoid consuming coffee or tea when taking their medication. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prescribing information, the recommended method for taking Wegovy involves taking the tablets on an empty stomach with up to four ounces of water only. No other liquids are advised during this time. Patients must wait at least 30 minutes before consuming food, other beverages, or oral medications to ensure proper absorption.
Instructions for Taking Wegovy Tablets
As the first FDA-approved oral medication for chronic weight management, Wegovy tablets have specific guidelines differing from the injectable forms. The absorption of this oral medication can be compromised by food and drink. Dr. Michael Hall, a board-certified physician and author of “Infinite Youth,” emphasizes that taking oral Wegovy requires an empty stomach and water only. “Coffee, tea, juice, or other drinks should not accompany the pill as they may interfere with the medicine’s absorption,” Dr. Hall noted.
Recommended Morning Routine for GLP-1 Tablet Users
- Wake up
- Take a whole Wegovy tablet with up to four ounces of plain water. The FDA advises that the tablets must not be split, crushed, chewed, or dissolved.
- Wait at least 30 minutes
- Proceed with breakfast, drinking coffee or tea, and other oral medications
Dr. Hall advises waiting 30 minutes to consume any other oral medications as foods and beverages other than water can affect medication absorption if taken too soon. This is crucial as GLP-1 medications may also slow stomach emptying, impacting the absorption of other medications.
Consultation and Additional Information
Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel also advises against taking GLP-1 pills with caffeinated beverages. While consuming tea throughout the day typically does not interfere with oral GLP-1 absorption, patients should consult with their healthcare providers. Certain teas, such as green, black, and white teas, may aid digestion, while ginger and peppermint teas may help reduce nausea.
