Bill Maher recently revealed on his ‘Club Random’ podcast that actor Ben Affleck has consistently declined invitations to return to HBO’s ‘Real Time’ following a contentious discussion in 2014. The disagreement centered around comments made by Maher and author Sam Harris regarding Islam, which Affleck criticized as ‘gross’ and ‘racist.’
‘I love him, but we just are going to disagree on that one,’ Maher stated, expressing his hope for a private conversation to resolve their differences.
Despite multiple invitations over the years, Affleck’s representative has not commented on whether the actor might reconsider appearing on the show. Affleck’s last appearance on ‘Real Time’ was in October 2014.
In a 2017 interview, Affleck explained that his heated response stemmed from a strong belief against stereotyping individuals by their race or religion. His stance aligns with the liberal principle that no one should be judged based on their religious or ethnic background. ‘I love a good debate, and I get very energized by it,’ Affleck remarked, emphasizing the emotional nature of his response.
The initial discussion also included New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof. Affleck challenged assertions made by Harris about Muslims, countering claims with examples of Muslims who lead peaceful lives, free from fanatical behavior. Affleck argued against generalizations stating, ‘How about more than a billion people who aren’t fanatical, who don’t punch women, who just want to go to school, have some sandwiches, pray five times a day and don’t do any of the things you’re saying of all Muslims?’
Harris clarified that his criticism targeted Islamic doctrine, not individuals, and stressed the importance of distinguishing between different groups within the Muslim community during the debate.
Maher defended his stance by highlighting incidents of threats and violence linked to Islamic blasphemy and dissent. He described it as the only religion that ‘acts like the mafia,’ posing a danger to dissenters.
The discussion sparked considerable attention, becoming one of the most mentioned episodes by viewers. Sam Harris noted during a 2022 ‘Club Random’ appearance that he and Affleck had settled their differences privately. However, Maher has not had such a conversation with Affleck.
