Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz is offering legal advice to ex-NBA player Royce White. White has announced his intent to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft. Gaetz and his firm, Gaetz Law, sent White’s declaration letter directly to the WNBA office.
Gaetz highlighted White’s role as a mental health advocate in the NBA. Now, White seeks to inspire Black transgender lesbians aiming to join the WNBA. Gaetz shared this information with Fox News Digital.
“Gaetz Law is currently providing legal counsel to Royce White,” Gaetz stated. “Royce White changed how the NBA thinks about player mental health. Now Royce White is an inspirational voice for Black transexual lesbians everywhere who aspire to play in the WNBA.”
White’s draft declaration, drafted by Gaetz, confirmed his identification as a transgender woman. In keeping with the WNBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, White asserts eligibility for draft consideration.
Following the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump considered Gaetz for Attorney General. Gaetz left Congress for this role but withdrew due to bipartisan controversy and past allegations raising confirmation challenges. The House Ethics Committee investigated allegations against Gaetz, which he denied, stating no charges or lawsuits were filed.
Now, Gaetz is helping White pursue participation in the WNBA. White mentioned pursuing a discrimination lawsuit if he remains undrafted and unsigned.
“I have to file a discrimination lawsuit, right? I mean, that’s, that’s ridiculous,” White said. “We’re gonna have to have a huge legal battle about discrimination if I can’t play.”
White suggests the WNBA clarify its stance on gender eligibility, questioning men’s participation in women’s leagues.
“I think the WNBA could come out and make a definitive statement about guys with a pair of balls playing in the Women’s Association,” he noted.
White, running for U.S. Senate, lost in the Minnesota primary to Michele Tafoya. Previously, he was defeated in the general election by Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar.
The WNBA’s gender policy is under review as it currently lacks explicit rules about biological female participation.
