The Republican National Committee (RNC) has cautioned that the Democratic Socialists of America’s recent homage to Fidel Castro could negatively impact the Democrats in the upcoming November elections. This warning came after the group praised the late Cuban leader and urged the prosecution of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio over his stance on Cuba.
Natalie Baldassarre, the national press secretary of the RNC, commented to Fox News Digital, stating the Democrats’ alignment with policies similar to those that led to the economic and political ruin in Venezuela, Cuba, and China. Baldassarre emphasized that this political direction could lead to a downfall.
“Democrats are openly embracing the same policies that left the people of Venezuela, Cuba and China with empty shelves, no electricity and their freedoms stripped away,” Baldassarre said.
Marco Rubio, whose family hails from Cuba, expressed his disdain for Castro’s legacy on X, criticizing the dictator for his role in destroying Cuba and oppressing its people.
The Democratic Socialists of America’s statement portrayed Castro as a symbol of anti-imperial resistance, celebrating his tenure after the revolution in 1959.
“Fidel was an organizer, a fighter, and endures as a stalwart symbol of anti-imperialist struggle and self-determination for the Global South,” the DSA declared.
The DSA accused U.S. sanctions of preventing essential resources from reaching Cuban civilians, labeling these actions as genocide under Rubio’s guidance.
“By intentionally imposing conditions calculated to kill a civilian population, Marco Rubio is leading a genocide,” they stated.
The organization demanded an end to what they termed a U.S. blockade, calling for normalized relations and reparations, along with the prosecution of Rubio for supposed crimes against humanity.
However, the White House refuted the DSA’s allegations. They attributed the economic and human rights issues in Cuba to its communist regime. Spokeswoman Anna Kelly reiterated the administration’s willingness to forge a new relationship with Cuba.
“The Cuban regime exemplifies everything that’s wrong with communism as its population suffers from food shortages, blackouts, poor standards of living and egregious human rights abuses,” Kelly said.
The pressure campaign by the U.S. included Rubio’s designation of five entities linked to Cuba’s revenue generation as part of a crackdown on foreign enablers. These actions stemmed from a recent executive order aimed at individuals responsible for repression in Cuba.
A State Department report named Cuba as the epicenter of 21st-century communism, listing the DSA among those supporting pro-Cuban activism in the U.S. The DSA disputed these claims, asserting their independence from Cuban government influence.
Fidel Castro passed away in 2016 at age 90, a decade after transferring power to his brother Raúl due to illness.
