A Night of Compassion: The Kindness of Strangers During Personal Crisis

Nearly 25 years ago, Jake Berry experienced one of his loneliest nights while attending college. He received distressing news about Jack, a close friend, who had been hospitalized unexpectedly. The details of Jack’s condition were scarce, and Berry was anxiously awaiting updates through phone calls, as texting was still in its infancy.

On that Thursday evening, Berry usually enjoyed outings with friends, but the news left him feeling too desolate for socializing. He chose to stay alone in his dorm room, grappling with uncertainty. Reflecting on the night, Berry shared, “I needed some time on my own to clear my head and learn more about what was going on. It quickly became one of the longest and loneliest nights of my life.”

Later that evening, Jess, one of Berry’s friends, visited his dorm room accompanied by two guests named Kim and Corey. The four engaged in conversation, and the newcomers were quick to empathize with Berry’s predicament. Kim and Corey took decisive action. They retrieved their car and drove Berry to his hometown, about an hour north, providing solace during his hardship.

Berry recounted, “They dropped me off at a friend’s house where many others were gathered. I spent the night there, sharing my grief and receiving comfort from my friends.” It was during this gathering that Berry strengthened bonds with friends who would become lifelong companions.

Ultimately, Berry’s friend Jack was diagnosed with lymphoma and succumbed to the illness a year later. Despite this tragic outcome, the support network formed around Jack during his illness remains a significant part of Berry’s life. “Those friends that I gathered with that night, now they’re my brothers. We have navigated life’s highs and lows together. Many of us now reside in the same town where we grew up, raising children together,” Berry shared.

Reflecting on the journey home that night, Berry expresses gratitude to Kim, Corey, and Jess. “I think about what I would have missed had I not been there that night, and I owe it to Kim, Corey, and Jess for making that possible.” Although Berry lost contact with Kim and Corey, he often thinks of their kindness and hopes that their generosity has been reciprocated in their lives.

“I really think of them often — the impact that they have had on my life.”
