In a dramatic event, 23-year-old pilot Faith Tenkley successfully executed an emergency water landing off the coast of Boca Raton, Florida, on August 22. The event was captured in footage reviewed by ‘Fox & Friends,’ showing Tenkley’s single-engine aircraft skillfully guided away from beachgoers and paddleboarders. Tenkley then swam safely to shore, her actions drawing praise from local authorities for her decisive decision-making.
A statement by Tenkley reflected her modesty, attributing success to the teamwork involved. She emphasized prioritizing the safety of individuals around her during the descent. Tenkley navigated her Piper away from hazards, including nearby buildings, paddleboarders, and swimmers.
Viral video circulated on social media showcasing the smooth water landing, as a man with a metal detector appeared oblivious to the unfolding events, continuing his search for treasures on the beach.
During the emergency, Tenkley had to manage her approach avoiding buildings and the crowded beach below. She expressed gratitude for the support received after the incident. Initially aiming to land at Boca Raton Airport, Tenkley opted for a water landing due to issues with the landing gear and full fuel tanks.
The Federal Aviation Administration reported that Tenkley was piloting her family’s twin-engine Piper PA-30, encountering mechanical problems while en route from Page Field in Fort Myers, Florida, to Bimini in the Bahamas. About 15 miles west of Boca Raton, she decided against Boca Raton Airport due to gear failure and the right engine’s malfunction.
Footage shows the aircraft safely descending over the busy beach, landing gently in the ocean. The plane’s structure remained mostly intact, allowing Tenkley to swim to safety with a lifeguard’s help soon after landing.
A Boca Raton Ocean Rescue fire boat arrived shortly afterward. She was taken to a hospital as a standard precaution but reported no injuries. Initially, some online viewers misinterpreted the footage, believing she was assisting a male pilot.
