To address this, he consulted with the trainers and strength staff to make necessary adjustments throughout the week. In his recent start against the New York Mets, Burke felt good again, indicating positive progress. He is scheduled to start in the series finale against the Texas Rangers.
Burke’s performance is crucial as the White Sox aim for a division title. They currently lead the Cleveland Guardians by 2 1/2 games in the American League Central. Manager Will Venable noted the fluctuating stability within the pitching staff but emphasized finding ways to win regardless of the situation.
The team faces challenges with a high bullpen workload due to short starting performances. They rank last in the majors with 561 innings pitched by starters, partly due to using openers. Recently, starter José Urquidy allowed five runs over three innings, contributing to an 11-2 loss to the Rangers. Luis Castillo also had a short outing against the Mets, with a 5.89 ERA in four starts since joining from the Seattle Mariners. Despite a strong game against the Reds, he struggled in recent games.
Anthony Kay has performed effectively, entering Tuesday’s start with a 2.66 ERA in his last four outings. He struck out 17 and walked four in 23 2/3 innings, pitching over six innings in most games. Burke shared positives from his outing against the Mets, showcasing control and command despite the loss.
Urquidy and Fedde contributed as bulk pitchers recently, stepping in after an opener. Fedde provided 8 2/3 scoreless innings in his latest appearances. Urquidy had a strong relief effort against the Cubs but faced a high pitch count in his recent start.
Injury adjustments continue with Davis Martin on the injured list due to a blister. The Sox maintain focus on upcoming challenges. Venable emphasized a game-by-game mindset for the team.
Sox place reliever Huáscar Brazobán on the IL
Relief pitcher Huáscar Brazobán was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left lat strain. In response, the Sox recalled right-hander Jonathan Cannon from Triple-A Charlotte. Brazobán has a 6.30 ERA in 10 relief appearances since joining from the Mets. Outfielder Andrew Benintendi was also placed on the bereavement/family medical emergency list, with Rikuu Nishida recalled from Charlotte.
