A driver in Florida collided with a school bus filled with 19 children while allegedly fleeing a traffic stop. After the crash, the suspect abandoned his vehicle and attempted to escape on foot, according to authorities.
The incident occurred on a Tuesday morning, shortly after 7:20 a.m., and was captured in dramatic video footage. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office reported that no children were injured in the crash.
Details of the Incident
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Qahiem Williams, faces several charges following the event. A deputy conducting traffic enforcement near The Villages Intermediate Center observed Williams driving at 17 mph over the speed limit on County Road 466. When the deputy made a U-turn and activated emergency lights to initiate a stop, Williams allegedly sped away and sideswiped two vehicles at a traffic light.
The resulting impact from these collisions damaged the axle of Williams’ vehicle, leading to a head-on crash with a school bus on County Road 103. Video from inside the bus depicts the impact, showing Williams’ vehicle with its driver’s side door open just before the collision.
Apprehension of the Suspect
Williams left his vehicle and fled on foot, as revealed by video footage from a police body camera. A deputy chased and apprehended him near a Walmart.
According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Williams was taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses. These include fleeing or eluding, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting an officer, hit-and-run, and a moving traffic violation. Additionally, Williams had two outstanding warrants in Sumter County for similar violations.
“I have zero tolerance when it comes to actions that put our children’s lives in danger,” said Sumter County Sheriff Patrick Breeden. “Our community is safer with him off our streets.”
Williams received medical clearance before being transferred to the Sumter County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.
