Former President Donald Trump has shared a post from conservative influencer Matt Van Swol on Truth Social, highlighting potential challenges Republicans face in the 2026 midterm elections. The post, originally made in July, was shared by Trump less than 70 days from the midterms, suggesting awareness of potential setbacks.
Van Swol criticized Republicans in Congress, attributing voter dissatisfaction to their actions, rather than Trump’s. He noted the lack of progress on key reforms, which has frustrated many voters. “People believed they were voting for the Trump agenda. Instead, many feel like they’re getting the same old Washington,” he wrote. Without tangible results, he warned, Republican Congress members could face serious consequences.
Historically, the governing party struggles in midterms if the president’s popularity wanes or the economic outlook darkens. Polls show Trump’s approval reached record lows recently, with a -17.4 net approval rating according to RealClearPolling. Moreover, economic concerns are prevalent, with the Consumer Confidence Index dropping to 89.4 in August.
Polling further indicates economic dissatisfaction. A YouGov and The Economist poll revealed only 3% of Americans consider the economy excellent, while 40% deem it poor.
“I’m very worried the GOP is sleepwalking toward a midterm reckoning they don’t see coming,” Van Swol emphasized in his post.
In the electoral landscape, Democrats aim to gain a few seats in the House from the GOP’s slim majority. In the Senate, the path is tougher for Democrats. They defend seats in Trump-won states such as Georgia and Michigan, while targeting Maine and North Carolina. With few competitive seats in GOP strongholds like Alaska, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas, a Democrat majority is uncertain even with a popular vote victory.
Recent generic ballot tests indicate Democrats hold modest leads. A McLaughlin & Associates poll showed a 5-point Democrat lead, with other polls revealing similar trends.
Democrats are also gaining in states Trump won by significant margins in 2024. In Alaska, polls reflect close Senate races between Democrat Mary Peltola and Republican Dan Sullivan. Similarly, Texas shows a competitive race between GOP Attorney General Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico.
In Ohio, reports show Democrat Sherrod Brown leading against Republican Jon Husted. Even in Iowa, a traditionally Republican stronghold, the races are tight.
This looming midterm could redefine political control and policy direction in the U.S., with numerous polls setting a tense atmosphere for both parties.
