Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton does not tolerate inaccurate sports TV analysis, particularly from ex-NFL players who should know the intricacies of evaluating a quarterback. This week, when Geoff Schwartz, a former offensive lineman turned TV analyst, misrepresented Bo Nix on national TV, Payton directly addressed it.
During a segment on ‘First Things First,’ Schwartz engaged in a discussion about whether Nix was poised for significant improvement in his second year or likely to plateau. Schwartz contended that Nix remained substantially the same quarterback as in his college days. He remarked, “I do think he just is what he is at this point. He looks like the same quarterback he was in college. He’s consistent. He’s not gonna make mistakes. But he’s not gonna push the ball down the field all that often.”
This assertion was quickly challenged by a Community Note correcting Schwartz’s statement. Data showed that since the 2024 season began, Nix has thrown the most touchdown passes of 20-plus air yards in the NFL, including the postseason, tallying 19 such passes.

In response, Payton criticized Schwartz’s analysis. Payton highlighted the importance of in-depth analysis expected from former players hired for expert perspectives. Schwartz’s comments about Nix contradicted available statistics. Nix’s ability to throw downfield was clearly demonstrated through his performance, which undermines Schwartz’s argument. The statistics are neither obscure nor cherry-picked.
Schwartz suggested that Nix has limitations as a passer, a topic worthy of debate. Yet, to portray Nix as a quarterback who rarely targets downfield lacks factual support. In this instance, Schwartz’s analysis fell short.
