House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan from Ohio has raised concerns regarding the actions of county prosecutors accused of leniency towards illegal immigrants involved in criminal activities. Jordan has hinted at the possibility of issuing subpoenas if these prosecutors fail to cooperate with the committee’s investigation.
The investigation focuses on district attorneys operating in ‘sanctuary jurisdictions.’ These areas are reportedly taking immigration status into account during the pursuit of criminal complaints, even if the crimes committed are unrelated to the individual’s legal status.
Jordan emphasized the committee’s commitment to gathering necessary documents through a structured process of requests and explanations. He assured that subpoenas would be used if cooperation is not forthcoming, emphasizing the need to uncover facts.
“If we have to, we’ll use subpoenas to get the documents that we think they may not be giving us,” Jordan stated during an interview. “There’s a process we always go through. We ask for things; we ask again; we explain why; we work with their office — in some cases their counsel — and back and forth.”
The Fairfax County District Attorney, Steve Descano, has come under scrutiny following a tragic incident involving Stephanie Minter. The accused killer reportedly entered the U.S. illegally from Sierra Leone in 2012 and had a record of over 30 arrests prior to the incident.
In 2020, Descano issued guidance for plea bargaining, instructing prosecutors to consider immigration consequences during charges. Fairfax County operates as a sanctuary jurisdiction, thus local law enforcement does not cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
“This is one of the dumbest policies I’ve ever heard of,” Jordan criticized, pointing out the dangers of non-cooperation between local and federal law enforcement in enforcing federal laws.
The committee’s investigation is not limited to Fairfax County. Other jurisdictions, such as those led by Alvin Bragg in New York and Larry Krasner in Philadelphia, are also under scrutiny for similar practices regarding illegal immigrants.
Descano’s 2019 campaign benefited from substantial donations from Justice and Public Safety PAC, backed by billionaire George Soros. The proximity of Fairfax County, a major suburb of Washington, D.C., to the national security hub, raises further concerns about sanctuary policies.
Jordan stressed the importance of investigating similar practices across various jurisdictions to address public safety concerns effectively.
